Massive nationwide protests turned violent across France on Saturday, October 17, 2026, leading to the arrest of over 1,200 people and injuring at least 150 police personnel. An estimated 550,000 to 800,000 demonstrators took to the streets in major cities, including Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Lille, and Rennes.
• Paris: Riot police deployed heavy tear gas and water cannons at the Place de la République and Place
de la Nation to push back crowds. Protesters draped the iconic Marianne statue in a yellow vest.
Vehicles and buildings were set ablaze, and multiple shops were looted.
• Lyon: The city's main tourist office was deliberately set on fire. Emergency responders faced resistance
from hostile groups while attempting to extinguish the flames.
• Marseille, Lille, & Limoges: Government and municipal properties became primary targets. Protesters
breached and severely vandalized town halls in Lille and Marseille, while a massive fire broke out at the
town hall in Limoges.
• Saint-Étienne: Severe casualties were reported on the ground, including a young demonstrator who
lost their hand during a violent confrontation.
• Many other French cities had serious riots, too. |

The LOOTING in MARSEILLES: French journalist Paul Amar said that rioters who tore through Marseilles had specific addresses to target and deliberately burned every Jewish-owned business on one street while leaving Muslim-owned shops on the same street untouched.
“They came prepared. They had the addresses of town halls. They had addresses of Jewish shop owners.”
Amar, a French television journalist, made the comments the day after mass looting and vandalism erupted across the country. He said the rioters were highly prepared. "There is a degree of preparation for this day that is absolutely important. They had the addresses of the prefectures. They had the addresses of quite a few Jewish shopkeepers. In a street in Marseilles, all the businesses owned by Jews were set on fire. The businesses run by Muslims were not."
In Marseilles, there were estimated to be more than 30,000 migrants involved in looting.
The Chamber of Commerce estimated that more than 600 shops were damaged or looted across the city center.
Targets included luxury and high-street stores such as Hermès, Rolex, Lacoste, SFR, Fnac, and the Centre Bourse mall.
Damage was widespread on streets including Saint-Ferréol, Grignan, Canebière, and Paradis.
Officers were injured.
Mayor Benoît Payan and Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez both described the violence as the work of casseurs (smashers) and delinquents, not ordinary protesters.
